I’m not one to shy away from mixing prints, patterns, and colors, but I can understand why some people might feel intimidated, especially with pieces that are bold and embellished.  I’ve found that a classic black and white striped tee is quite possibly the easiest piece to pair with just about anything, even brightly hued embroidery.
